Individuals wanting to be certified as a CNA Instructor must be approved by the DHSS to attend the train-the-trainer course. This training course is conducted either by a Long-Term Care (LTC) Association or the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.

The applicant must meet the following qualifications to become an instructor:

  • A Registered Nurse (RN) licensed in Missouri or in possession of a temporary permit from the Missouri State Board of Nursing. The licensee shall not be subject to current disciplinary action; and
  • A minimum of two (2) years of nursing experience and at least one (1) year experience in a LTC facility within the last five (5) years

The applicant must provide documentation showing these requirements are fulfilled. The DHSS will evaluate and verify the applicant's credentials (resume). The DHSS will notify the individual in writing within seven (7) to ten (10) working days regarding the request.

An applicant must attend the state approved instructor train-the-trainer course. When the individual has successfully completed the course their name will be added to the Department's CNA Instructor Registry.
