About The Course

This ten hour course is sponsored by Missouri Team Nutrition. It was developed by Cooking Matters™, a national organization with a proven track record in food preparation training for families. Participants take part in hands-on activities that will help improve skills at planning and preparing tasty, healthy, low-cost meals for children. Class members prepare several dishes each day, then sit down to eat lunch together.

The course modules include:

  • Creating Positive Mealtime Attitudes
  • Safe Cooking with Confidence
  • Choosing Healthy Foods for Kids
  • Meals that Appeal to Kids
  • Menu Management on a Budget

The course consists of two five-hour classes that are held on Saturdays.

The Teaching Team

Lisa Farmer - the lead instructor for the course Lisa Farmer is the lead instructor for each course. Lisa’s experience includes 7 years as Nutrition Coordinator for an urban Head Start agency and previous work with a sponsoring organization for CACFP home daycares. She has done "Cooking with Lisa" on Kansas City Fox 4 TV for the past 11 years. Lisa’s enthusiasm and her passion for healthy, delicious food make this a fun and educational training.

The second instructor will vary. This person is typically a chef and will complement Lisa’s skills.

Who Should Attend?

Child care family home or group home providers who plan, purchase, and prepare meals for the children.

What Do I Get?

  • A 100 page Cooking Matters workbook with child-friendly recipes, reminder tips and activities to help children learn about food.
  • Clock hours! The course is approved for ten clock hours toward meeting the annual child care provider training requirement. Participants must attend both sessions to graduate from the course and receive clock hours. You will also receive some small gifts that you can use in your child care food service.  There is no charge for this course.
  • Take-home ingredients to prepare one recipe and try it with your children.
  • A food thermometer and cutting mat.
  • The opportunity to share ideas with fellow child care providers.
