  1. Nutrition Assessment and HANDS Implementation Date Change: At the VENA training sessions in October and November, specific dates were given for implementation of HANDS changes for the new Nutrition Assessment (NA) screens. Trainees were told that we would implement a change in HANDS on January 16, 2007 making the Nutrition Assessment Screens available for keying for those LWPs who chose to enter the information electronically. In response to agency concerns and the need for streamlining screen changes to make keying easier, the implementation date for the screens has been postponed tentatively to July 1, 2007. Information on the screens will be presented at the March Program Updates Training sessions.   2. Chinese Version of Nutrition Assessment Forms: Attached are the Chinese versions of the WIC Nutrition Assessment forms for Women (WIC-36), for Infants (WIC-37) and for Children (WIC- 35). Please make copies as needed. If you have any questions please contact Takako Tagami at Takako.Tagami@health.mo.gov.

  3. Translated Resource Material Survey: The State WIC office has made translated resource materials available to assist local agencies in providing better services to non-English speaking participants. We would like to receive feedback from each LWP on frequency of use and helpfulness of the materials. Please complete the attached survey form and return it to Takako Tagami by faxing to 573-526-1470 or e-mailing Takako.Tagami@health.mo.gov by February 19, 2007. Your feedback is important in determining needs and developing additional translated resource materials.

  4. 2007-2008 Program for Dietetic Interns (PDI): The State WIC Office had excellent candidates for the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services (DHSS) Program for Dietetic Interns (PDI) through the Pre-select option. We are pleased to announce that two (2) interns were selected for the 2007-2008 PDI class through this option, which means that two interns for next year are from LWP sites. The two interns from LWPs for next year beginning in September 2007 are Leslie Hesse, Pettis Co. Health Dept. and Amy Johnson, Johnson Co. Dept. of Health. There will be two (2) slots available through computer match process for anyone who may be interested. The deadline for the computer match process is February 15, 2007. Attached are two documents regarding the computer match process.   5. University of Alabama Pediatric Nutrition Satellite Conference Sites Needed: Sites are needed by February 9th to host a viewing site for the 2007 Annual Pediatric Update from the University of Alabama at Birmingham on Wednesday, June 6th from 12:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. WICNS is sponsoring this educational opportunity: "Prevention, Assessment and Treatment in Childhood Obesity: Recommendations from the AMA Expert Task Force on Childhood Obesity".

    This satellite training is usually held at health offices throughout the state. Registered dietitians, nutritionists, WIC agencies, and other health care professionals will strengthen their knowledge of techniques in preventing, assessing, and treating patients with childhood obesity. This teleconference will review the evidence and present the task force recommendations. In addition, discussions will focus on how to implement these recommendations in both community and clinical (primary care and tertiary care) settings. This is an annual pediatric update conducted by the University of Alabama at Birmingham. They will arrange for all continuing education for dietitians and nurses. Individual registration pamphlets will be available in the spring.   6. Clarification on who should attend March WIC Program Updates Training: At a minimum the Nutrition Coordinator from each agency must attend the training. Any staff that keys data will want to attend the HANDS changes session. Any staff that uses the computer on a regular basis or needs agency specific information from the computer will want to attend the Data Warehouse session.

    The one-day sessions will provide attendees with updated program information and clarification regarding new program issues. The training will be delivered on-site at several locations and dates throughout the state. Training dates and locations are listed below. Please note the St. Joseph/Buchanan site is full.

    Agenda items include: USDA 3-digit risk factor codes, USDA Revision 8 Dietary Risk Factors, Nutrition Assessment, HANDS Changes, and Data Warehouse.

  7. Local WIC Provider (LWP) Procedures for Computer Problems: If you have problems with WIC computers, monitors, printers or other equipment, need email accounts established, 3270-mainframe application software installed or have mainframe password problems, please contact the Department’s Information Technology Services Division (ITSD) Help Desk at 800-347-0887 to have the problem corrected. If the ITSD Help Desk cannot take care of the problem over the phone, ITSD field computer technicians will go to your office to do the repairs. If they cannot repair the item and it needs to be replaced, they will call Mark Davis at the state WIC office. Mark Davis will then initiate the process to have the item replaced. If you have contacted the ITSD Help Desk and have not received service in a timely manner, contact Mark Davis.
