- Increasing breastfeeding rates and breastfeeding duration rates are goals set by USDA. LWPs are to include goals and activities in their agency plans to increase breastfeeding rates. Each LWP should have a positive clinic environment, which endorses breastfeeding as the preferred method of infant feeding. Agencies are required to incorporate task-appropriate breastfeeding promotion and support training into orientation programs for new staff involved in direct contact with WIC clients. LWPs should also have a plan to ensure that women have access to breastfeeding promotion and support activities during the prenatal and postpartum periods. Attached is a letter and application form requesting LWPs to submit applications for the Breastfeeding Peer Counseling Program for FFY 2007. The deadline for submitting the request to implement or continue the BFPC program for FFY 2007 is June 15, 2006. If questions please contact Kathy Mertzlufft at 1-800-392-8209 or via e-mail at email@example.com.
- The attached is a brochure for the Cultural Competency 101 workshop. The workshop will be held at six locations in July and September. This workshop is designed to introduce the concept of cultural competence and promote self-awareness, while helping people understand and respect cultural and ethnic differences. Various resources and tools for promoting cultural competence will be available. All WIC staff members including Clerks, HPAs, CPAs, Administrators, WIC Coordinators, WIC Nutrition Coordinators, Breastfeeding Coordinators, and WIC Vendor Coordinators are strongly encouraged to attend this workshop. Vendor Coordinators are encouraged to contact local WIC vendors and invite them to attend. This training opportunity will be included in the Missouri Grocers Association (MGA) newsletter. The registration brochure also will be available on DHSS website. Please do not miss this great learning opportunity!
