Health Professional Loan Repayment
The Missouri Health Professional Loan Repayment Program provides two loan repayment program options: State Loan Repayment Program and Nurse Loan Repayment. Both programs provide funding for the repayment of qualified educational loans.
The State Loan Repayment Program (SLRP) is funded through a combination of federal and cost sharing state funds. In exchange for the financial support, health professionals must agree to practice in a Health Professional Shortage Area (HPSA) in Missouri for a contracted time period. The following primary care disciplines apply to SLRP:
- Primary Care physicians
- family practice
- general internal medicine
- Dentists - primary care/general
- Identify if your background (where you grew up) is considered rural or disadvantaged.
- Verify you are eligible to accept Medicaid patients. Please state whether or not you are currently accepting new patients.
- Please provide total number of patient encounters by Medicaid/Uninsured/insured/State Child Health Insurance Program (SCHIP)
The Nurse Loan Repayment Program (NLRP) is offered to assist in alleviating the critical shortages of nurses. Funding for this program is provided through nurse license renewal fees. The following category of nurses is eligible for financial assistance in return for working in a Missouri hospital, federally qualified health center or HPSA.
- Doctoral nurses
- Advanced Practice nurses
- Registered nurses
Maximum Loan Repayment Amounts
- $ 25,000.00 per year for physicians & dentists
- $ 10,000.00 per year for doctoral nurses, advanced practice nurses, psychologists & licensed clinical social workers
- $ 5,000.00 per year for primary care registered nurses
- Submission of completed applications, including all required supporting documentation. Incomplete applications will be ineligible.
- Employed at a practice site located in a Health Professional Shortage Area (HPSA) that provides primary medical, dental or behavioral health care services in an outpatient/ambulatory care setting.
- Employed at a practice site that provides treatment regardless of a patient’s ability to pay for services (SLRP only)
- Employed at a site offering discounted fees to qualifying patients
- Employed at a site accepting Medicare & Medicaid reimbursements
- Employed at a public or non-profit site (SLRP only)
- Employed on a full-time basis defined as practicing no less than thirty-two (32) hours per week in direct patient care
- No existing service contract (e.g., PRIMO, National Health Service Corps, MO Nursing Program)
Selection is a competitive process. The number of applicants awarded each year varies and is contingent upon available federal and state funding.
Applications will be accepted January 1 through March 31 for SLRP and from January 1 through May 31 for NLRP.
