  • Unintentional injuries are the leading cause of death among ages 1-44. More years of potential life were lost due to injury than to any other cause of death.
  • Motor Vehicle traffic crashes are the leading cause of injury death among ages 1 -4 and 20- 24. Based on 2016 Missouri traffic crash data for ages 1-24, 2019 people were killed and 18,707 were injured (all injury levels).
  • Falls are the leading cause of death related to unintentional injury among ages 65 and older. Death from falls in Missouri is higher than the national average (68.61 vs. 61.6 per 100,000 population in 2016)
  • Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death. More Missourians die by suicide than by driving while intoxicated (DWI), homicide or AIDS.
